Movie Description:
Set in two dichotomous worlds, Shanghai Kiss tells the tale of a Chinese-American actor who doesn’t reasonably fit in anywhere. In his hometown, he’s considered a foreigner even even if he’s American. And in his family’s native China, his mannerisms make him stick out in sea of traditional faces. Ken Leung (The Sopranos) does a wonderful job portraying Liam Liu, a complicated young man whose flirtation with the teenage Adelaide (Hayden Panettiere, Heroes) is reminiscent of Timothy Hutton’s cautious infatuation with the Natalie Portman character in 1996′s Gorgeous Girls. It could’ve been played a small creepy, but the link between the dodgy couple is sweet. When Liam inherits his grandmother’s estate in Shanghai, he travels to China thinking he will sell the property and head back home. But “home” becomes a more elusive thought when he realizes that his feelings are torn between two countries and, with the meeting of Micki Yang (Kelly Hu, X2), two women. There are several moments when the film has the feel of an afterschool special (Liam’s father blaming him for his mother’s death), but overall Shanghai Kiss tells a like tale in an honest, if not completely realistic way. Feelings aren’t cut and dried, and people aren’t interchangeable. –Jae-Ha Kim

Movie Review:
Don’t just Netflix it. Buy it! The plot was so original and unique in so many different ways. The dialogue of Ken Leung was downright spotless. Hayden Panettiere’s is growing and I don’t mean her age. She hones into the character of Adelaide. If your an Asian-American and you’re reading this review, I suggest you to chase this DVD and study it like a f**king text book. The film deals with lost identity, something every Asian-American (male) goes through in life. It’s a reflection of Hollywood, romance, miscommunication, social association and actuality. Most importantly…finally a Chinese leading male actor gets its!! The only flaw with the DVD features that there is no subtitles and the in the rear the scenes were ‘ehh’. –By P. Chen

Plot outline:
A struggling Chinese-American actor, who unwittingly finds himself involved with a high school girl, learns he has inherited his grandmother’s home in Shanghai. The American-raised character moves to China in an have a crack to join with his ancestry, leaving in the rear reasonably maybe the only girl who has ever loved him.
