There Will be Blood is a story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century Texas prospector (Daniel Day-Lewis) in the early days of the business.

Movie Review
Having only seen the trailer for this film on an excursion to see “no country for old men“, I bear intense anticipation for this film, and it’s analogous relevance. An all-American, conservative, free-market oil-barren at odds with a religious figure seems all-too-relevant today, especially considering the fact that - in my understanding - neither comes out the winner. The film - quite intelligently - forms it’s stance on one side of a political argument, strategically more powerful, relevant and intrinsically more affecting here than within any stale form of two-sided, played-out, democrat vs. republican narrative, as is most common in a plot such as this. It is this that provides an unpolitical guise, while continuing to lend insight into the negative results of a culture that exists primarily on a take-what-one-can mentality. I truly cannot wait to see what happens, and i am quite pleased to have an advanced screening pass. The plot-line and development seems confidently complex and critical, and will hopefully have every side asking questions at film’s end. One only has to view the trailer to see that this FILM is amongst the most brilliantly constructed testaments within the u.s.-based industry in the past number of years. The sheerly chilling beauty in the pairing of the ice-y, stalking music to the absolutely beautiful, equally chilling imagery lends credence to the impact that the film ought to have. if nothing else, the film will look great. If as visually impactful as it appears, it should transcend the conscious presence of political narrative and rhetoric, and deeply affect the viewer as to the complexities of the ruling, powerful class that arose in the united states within the focused time period. This - through the observance of other reviews - seems to have been achieved. A true GOLDEN EAGLE, if you will, of American film, as it appears. To hell with Scorsese and his hinderingly vague nouvelle appropriations. On a scale of 1 to APOCALYPTO, this movie will surely be at least a 27. — halfropuff from Canada

Plot Synopsis
There Will Be Blood is a movie “loosely ” adapted by Paul Thomas Anderson from the 1927 novel OIL! by Upton Sinclair. The movie centers on a character Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, who starts out as a simple silver miner, that happens upon oil in his silver efforts.

Fast forward a few years and he’s made himself a pretty rich man, a wise and shrewd business/oil man, that gets to the point to where he’ll step over anyone to get what he wants. You see, Daniel Plainview is not a very decent person, who constantly wrestles with his demons. He is a borderline nihilist, who doesn’t like people and thinks most humans are lazy and ignorant. You understand the only reason that he has people in his life is because he couldn’t benefit financially if he didn’t. Otherwise he could care less. It’s all about finding new oil spots with him, and nothing will get in his way and derail his goals. He may not be a good man, but you cannot deny his desire and work ethic. He risks his life more than once setting up oil derricks.

But, he almost meets his match in the form of a young man of the word of God in Eli Sunday, played by Paul Dano. This is not a good relationship. You see, Plainview wants to drill for oil on the Sunday’s property. And he wants to do so in a not so honest way, by chiseling them out of their share of money. He thinks the Sunday family are hicks. Ignorant with absolutely no business sense, which is somewhat true. But Eli knows they are in for more than Plainview tells them.

Essentially, Plainview will be ripping off the Sunday family. Things start to happen that aren’t good. Plainview seeths for Eli. You get the idea that if he could kill Eli, and get away with it then he would. Eli, for his own merit, is a blow hard, and Plainview knows this. But for all of the hard work Daniel has done over the years, little things begin to perculate mentally with him. The demons begin to really get to him as he tries to hide and ignore them. Though he becomes rich beyond his imagination, there is a price to pay. Nobody ends up the true winner. Almost every human emotion is displayed in There Will Be Blood. Love, hate, passion, greed, jealousy, pettiness, paranoia, trust and sadness.

Morality really becomes the true issues in this story. As for the script, there is much material for the thesp Day Lewis to sink his teeth into as Plainview. In reading, you can relate to why he accepted the role. Any actor would have. It’s a impressive script that should adapt well to the movie screen.

The Coen brothers make their finest thriller since Fargo with a restrained adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel. Not that there aren’t moments of intense violence, but No Country for Old Men is their quietest, most existential film yet. In this modern-day Western, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is a Vietnam vet who could use a break. One morning while hunting antelope, he spies several trucks surrounded by dead bodies (both human and canine). In examining the site, he finds a case filled with $2 million. Moss takes it with him, tells his wife (Kelly Macdonald) he’s going away for awhile, and hits the road until he can determine his next move. On the way from El Paso to Mexico, he discovers he’s being followed by ex-special ops agent Chigurh (an eerily calm Javier Bardem). Chigurh’s weapon of choice is a cattle gun, and he uses it on everyone who gets in his way–or loses a coin toss (as far as he’s concerned, bad luck is grounds for death). Just as Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), a World War II vet, is on Moss’s trail, Chigurh’s former colleague, Wells (Woody Harrelson), is on his. For most of the movie, Moss remains one step ahead of his nemesis. Both men are clever and resourceful–except Moss has a conscious, Chigurh does not (he is, as McCarthy puts it, “a prophet of destruction”). At times, the film plays like an old horror movie, with Chigurh as its lumbering Frankenstein monster. Like the taciturn terminator, No Country for Old Men doesn’t move quickly, but the tension never dissipates. This minimalist masterwork represents Joel and Ethan Coen and their entire cast, particularly Brolin and Jones, at the peak of their powers. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Movie Review
Tommy Lee Jones gives an outstanding performance as the sheriff who realizes that the drug problem is one that is not currently solvable. It takes him time to come to this conclusion, after trying valiantly to protect the innocent people who were killed in connection with the drug crime in the film but eventualy decides that he can no longer fight the fight — although he has always been wise, capable and willing. The chase takes an enormous toll as he sees how innocent victims are killed over and over, despite his attempts. It is a wake up call to those who are paying attention. –By Dorothy B. Johnson “Books,Movies,Travel-my life” (Connecticut, USA)

Plot Synopsis
The film opens with a shot of desolate, wide-open country in West Texas in June 1980. In a voice over, the local sheriff, Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), tells of the changing times: in the old days, some sheriffs never wore guns, as did his late father, who was the sheriff before him; in the modern day and age, however, Bell once sent an unrepentant teenage boy to the electric chair who had killed a girl simply because he wanted to kill someone, had been “fixin’” to do it for some time, and would do it again if he had the chance.

A man named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is being arrested by a deputy (Zach Hopkins). Back at the otherwise empty police station, the deputy describes on the phone Chigurh’s strange possession, a compressed air cattle-gun. The deputy is on the phone with Sheriff Bell, but has his back to Chigurh, who sneaks up behind him and garrotes him with his handcuffs. Chigurh falls back on the floor with the deputy, a strange grin washing across his face, as his wriggling victim finally expires. After cleaning himself up in the station bathroom, Chigurh pulls over a man in a Ford with the deputy’s police car. Politely asking the man to step out the car, Chigurh puts his hand on the man’s head like a faith-healer and shoots the cattle gun through the man’s skull. Chigurh then drives off in the man’s car. Read More…

Movie Description
Somewhere between the sharp satire of Election and the rich human comedy of You Can Count On Me lies Juno, a sardonic but ultimately compassionate story of a pregnant teenage girl who wants to give her baby up for adoption. Social misfit Juno (Ellen Page, Hard Candy, X-Men: The Last Stand) protects herself with a caustic wit, but when she gets pregnant by her friend Paulie (Michael Cera, Superbad), Juno finds herself unwilling to terminate the pregnancy. When she chooses a couple who place a classified ad looking to adopt, Juno gets drawn further into their lives than she anticipated. But Juno is much more than its plot; the stylized dialogue (by screenwriter Diablo Cody) seems forced at first, but soon creates a richly textured world, greatly aided by superb performances by Page, Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman as the prospective parents, and J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man) and Allison Janney as Juno’s father and stepmother. Director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) deftly keeps the movie from slipping into easy, shallow sarcasm or foundering in sentimentality. The result is smarter and funnier than you might expect from the subject matter, and warmer and more touching than you might expect from the cocky attitude. Page’s performance is deceptively simple; she never asks the audience to love her, yet she effortlessly carries a movie in which she’s in almost every scene. That’s star power. –Bret Fetzer

Movie Review
…and this is one of those films. It is both hilarious and touching. It is also one of the most realistic films about teenage life that I have ever seen. Ellen Page is amazing. I loved her in “Hard Candy” - her performance, not her character - and I loved her in this film as well. She is Juno, and you care for this young lady and her ordeal. Ellen Page is an amazing actress, and I cannot wait to see her future films. The rest of the cast is also excellent. One thing that must be mentioned here is the writing. It is so funny and so honest, and all I have to say is that screenwriter, Diablo Cody, is a genius when it comes to words. Some people have said that this film is derivative of Wes Anderson’s work, but I totally disagree. It is Jason Reitman’s best film so far, and I liked this one better than “Thank You For Smoking”. The music is also very quirky, and I liked it a lot… Please, do not miss the chance to see this one in the theatre! You will laugh your head off, and you will come out of it deeply moved. I loved this film! SEE IT! –By Adam (SC)

Plot Synopsis
Juno (Ellen Page) is a Mid-Western highschooler, who decides one day, out of boredom or curiosity, to have sex with her friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera), a member of her school’s track team. She likes him well enough, but isn’t hung up on him. This one time encounter results in Juno’s pregnancy. She and her best friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby) decide to take control of the situation by browsing for prospective adoptive parents in the local Pennysaver newspaper, and Juno settles on seemingly the perfect, affluent couple Mark (Jason Bateman) and Vanessa Loring (Jennifer Garner) who is desperate to have a child. Junos sensitive father (J.K. Simmons) and stepmother (Allison Janney) are very supportive of her and help Juno with her decision to give the baby up for adoption. Juno and her father check out Mark and Vanessa Loring to see if they are the right couple. As time moves closer to having the baby, Juno grows more into a woman, yet she is still a teenager with all the same problems and a few more.

Movie Description
In Babel, a tragic incident involving an American couple in Morocco sparks a chain of events for four families in different countries throughout the world. In the struggle to overcome isolation, fear, and displacement, each character discovers that it is family that ultimately provides solace.

In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out– detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple’s frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children, and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost – lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves – as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.

In this mesmerizing, emotional film that was shot in three continents and four languages – and traverses both the deeply personal and the explosively political — acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams, Amores Perros) explores with shattering realism the nature of the barriers that seem to separate humankind. In doing so, he evokes the ancient concept of Babel and questions its modern day implications: the mistaken identities, misunderstandings and missed chances for communication that– though often unseen– drive our contemporary lives. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael García Bernal, Kôji Yakusho, Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi lead an international ensemble of actors and non-professional actors from Morocco, Tijuana and Tokyo, who enrich Babel’s take on cultural diversity and enhance its powerful examination of the links and frontiers between and within us.

Movie Review
Brilliantly conceived, superbly directed, and beautifully acted, Babel is inarguably one of the best films of 2006. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his co-writer, Guillermo Arriaga (the two also collaborated on Amores Perros and 21 Grams) weave together the disparate strands of their story into a finely hewn fabric by focusing on what appear to be several equally incongruent characters: an American (Brad Pitt) touring Morocco with his wife (Cate Blanchett) become the focus of an international incident also involving a hardscrabble Moroccan farmer (Mustapha Rachidi) struggling to keep his two young sons in line and his family together. A San Diego nanny (Adriana Barraza), her employers absent, makes the disastrous decision to take their kids with her to a wedding in Mexico. And a deaf-mute Japanese teen (the extraordinary Rinko Kikuchi) deals with a relationship with her father (Koji Yakusho) and the world in general that’s been upended by the death of her mother. It is perhaps not surprising, or particularly original, that a gun is the device that ties these people together. Yet Babel isn’t merely about violence and its tragic consequences. It’s about communication, and especially the lack of it–both intercultural, raising issues like terrorism and immigration, and intracultural, as basic as husbands talking to their wives and parents understanding their children. Iñárritu’s command of his medium, sound and visual alike, is extraordinary; the camera work is by turns kinetic and restrained, the music always well matched to the scenes, the editing deft but not confusing, and the film (which clocks in at a lengthy 143 minutes) is filled with indelible moments. Many of those moments are also pretty stark and grim, and no will claim that all of this leads to a “happy” ending, but there is a sense of reconciliation, perhaps even resolution. “If You Want to be Understood… Listen,” goes the tagline. And if you want a movie that will leave you thinking, Babel is it. –Sam Graham

Plot Synopsis
Main characters Pitt and Blanchett leave their two children in San Diego to spend quality time in Morrocco. Blanchett is shot by a stray bullet coming from a Morrocan goat farmer son who is testing out a new rifle. She almost dies while she is waiting to be transported to a hospital. Their trip gets extended and the Mexican housekeeper who is watching the two children has a son who is getting married immediately in Mexico. She has no one to watch the children so she takes them across the border for the wedding. The wedding is over and she has her drunk gun-toting nephew drive her across the border. They get stopped, decide to run for it, the nephew dumps them in the desert and leaves. They almost die but get found by a Border Patrol agent. The kids are returned and the Mexican housekeeper/nanny gets deported back to Mexico. Also, squeeze in a crazy deaf/mute Japanese teenage girl with a hairy monster that wants to lose her virginity….

Movie Description
Winner of the World Audience Award at Sundance, Once starts out as a small-scale romance, like Before Sunrise, before arriving somewhere unexpected. An Irish busker (Glen Hansard, the Frames and The Commitments) meets a Czech flower seller (Markéta Irglová) while singing on the streets of Dublin. (In the credits, they’re listed as Guy and Girl.) She likes what she hears and lets him know. Turns out she’s a musician, too. They work on a few songs together and a friendship is forged. She lives with her widowed mother, who doesn’t speak English. He lives with his widowed father, who owns a repair shop. Since he broke up with his girlfriend, the guy has been drifting, unable and unwilling to get his life in order. The girl encourages him to pursue a record deal, and the guy emerges from his funk. Then he makes a move on the girl, who rejects his advances. He’s confused, but as he comes to find, there’s a reason she’s keeping her distance. Though Once is filled with appealing folk-pop by Hansard and Irglová (released on CD as The Swell Season), the movie isn’t a traditional musical, but rather a more optimistic Brief Encounter. Filmmaker John Carney, Hansard’s former bandmate, captures the real city–in all its affluence and poverty–rather than the picture postcard version. His beautifully shot film serves as a heartfelt ballad about all the underclass Guys and Girls swept aside amidst Ireland’s economic miracle.

Movie Review
I decided to see this on a whim, not really knowing what it was about. It was just what I needed. As someone who has been going through a lot of stress lately and not really listening to music, it reminded me to bring the music back. If the songs were not good, there is no way that I would have made it through the film. A man and a woman meet while he is playing guitar and singing in the street for money. She wants to hear more. He is a little jaded from his last relationship, but he can’t help but like her. Later on, he finds out that she plays piano and they come together in the piano store to play a song together. That was my favorite song in the movie. I found myself glued to the screen, and then, my mind wandering, because it reminded me that I need to discover some new music. Things don’t always end in life they way they do in Hollywood movies (and I’m glad for that) but you still can’t help dropping a few tears. So touching and beautiful. I will definitely buy the soundtrack. A charming, real film.. –By Diane Moore “indiegirl” (Bermuda Dunes, CA)

Plot Synopsis
A Guy (with no name - Glen Hansard of the Irish band Frames) is singing his heart out on the streets of Dublin for tip money. One day a Czech Girl (with no name - Marketa Irglova) stops to listen to the Guy play his music. She is very impressed by his songs and she asks if he wrote his own music. The Guy says that he writes and loves to play his own songs to himself even if the street crowd wants to hear other music. It is nice to earn tips, but that is not what his music is all about. The Guy lives at home and helps his father repair vacuum cleaners, but he has a dream of becoming a recording star. His girlfriend of many years has just left him and is now living in London. You can tell what this has done to his emotions, because it is being reflected in his new songs. The Girl who happens to have a broken vacuum cleaner also has a musical background of playing the piano and writing songs. Their music brings them together and the Girl begins to help the Guy realize his dream. They begin to share their music and their feeling for each other. They put together a band with other street players and rent a recording studio for the weekend to record two demos. This could be the start of a new and wonderful life.
