No chemistry between the romantic leads for us, March 28, 2009

Plot is a romance between a girl who believes in marrying for love and a guy happy to let his parents arrange something. There is a subplot built around an orphanage she does work with which is run by Amitabh Bachchan (who plays a man young at heart and full of childlike pranks).

We were disappointed in this one as Vivek Oberoi and Ashwarya Rai, the romantic leads, had no chemistry. In addition Ash (who is in fact 3 years older than Vivek) looked much older and more mature than him and it didn't seem believable that she would see in someone still a boy (unless she is a sucker for male model looks!).

The role Vivek plays has him being a superficial young man who isn't in touch with his emotions. So he is laughing and avoidant when sensitive emotions are on the agenda. His motto is 'love and defeat are not in my vocabulary'. He played this so well perhaps that we weren't engaged with him (as we had been in Saathiya for instance). When together they looked like they were posing together rather than relating to each other. At other times she seemed even slightly annoyed with him (even allowing for the plot). My co-viewer abandoned the movie half way because she didn't like the lack of chemistry either.

This seems to be rated higher by Ash fans so if you are one of them you may like it more. Some of the movie is catchy and some of the dances not bad. It was nominated for several awards in the music categories. Elsewhere on the Net it is rated quite variably - from below average to average mostly but with scoring from about 4 to 9 out of 10. I'm not keeping this one.

Fun loving, happy-go-lucky Arjun Khanna (Vivek Oberoi) believes in the tried-and-true tradition of arranged marriages. And why not? It worked well for his father and his grandfather and so on. His battle cry is "love and defeat are not part of my vocabulary!" So even though he loathes losing whatever competition he enters, he's perfectly fine with any girl his parents pick for him to wed. Diya Malhotra (Aishwarya Rai), on the other hand, is more romantic and strongly espouses the notion of marrying strictly for love.

These two opposing forces soon collide when Diya comes to study in Mumbai and stays with the Khannas, Arjun's father being an old crony of Diya's father. At first, Arjun and Diya annoy each other (with Arjun doing most of the annoying), then later become fast friends. Diya finds herself falling in love with the clueless Arjun, who doesn't yet reciprocate her feelings. Diya packs up and heads home in tears. If there were an intermission, it would be at this point of the film.

The opening minutes of the film's second half is disconcerting. It gets underway with the intro of Uncle Raj (Amitabh Bachchan), who has an impish, childish sense of humor, which he puts to good use in his dealings with the kids of the orphanage he runs. A fair amount of time is focused solely on his character and his orphans and all I kept thinking was "Where are Diya and Arjun?" But things get back on track once Diya reappears. The orphanage, it seems, is where Diya spends a good portion of her time, now that she's back home. But can she manage to forget Arjun? And can Arjun be far behind? Will love win out? Or will something else happen to jeopardize these two people's happiness? And just how did Uncle Raj's tongue and teeth get all blue?

Kyun! Ho Gaya Na... is an easy going romantic comedy, with the last half hour or so finally giving over to a more somber tone. I'm in love with Aish so I never have anything bad to say about her (when I have a baby girl I'm naming her Aishwarya; heck, if I have a boy I'm naming him Aishwarya). No one can roll her eyes or well up in tears or dance like her, although she might stop with the winking. But Aish pulls off that next-door girl persona exceedingly well, for someone with her jaw-dropping looks. Vivek Oberoi is a good-looking chap with a devilish nature and he's mostly good, considering his character is infinitely juvenile. Some of the pranks he pulls on Aish are borderline mean and definitely insensitive. And later on in the film, he overdoes the hurt puppy, doe-eyed act. Amitabh Bachchan is a bit offsetting here, one minute mischievous and playfully spraying the orphans with water pistols, the next minute acting the stern and wise elder. But he's the great Amitabh Bachchan so I guess he knows what he's doing.

The songs aren't bad. There's a song (Dilwalon Suno...) in which Mr. Bachchan actually shows he doesn't have two left feet (unlike in Bunty Aur Babli's Kajra Re). The one I like the most is No No Tum Kisi Pe..., a number done with an R&B/hip-hop flavor, which has tight choreography and really showcases Vivek and Aish's great dancing. A pretty interesting one is Pyar Mein..., which is the first song and reveals the two leads' feelings about love and marriage.

There are 2 discs in this edition. The primary disc, of course, has the film and director Samir Karnik's film commentary. The bonus disc contains some nice extra feature goodies: some deleted scenes; cute out-takes; a making-of-the-film segment; 25 bonus songs (most of which are gleaned from other Aish flicks, one of the songs being the famous Aish-Madhuri dance-off Dola Re number from Devdas); and a very cool, informative music release segment, which was a movie promo done in front of a huge audience - with the actual singers performing live one of the musical tracks (No no Tum Kisi Pe...) and which had Aish and Vivek dropping in and dancing in person (and later being interviewed, along with the director). All in all, a very good bang for your buck. I give it 3 and half stars.

If you like the Smurfs cartoon, you'll probably like The Smurfs movie. I thought that Hank Azaria really did a great job as Gargamel. The movie focuses on several Smurfs, but all of the Smurfs do get involved near the end of the movie.

I saw on the High-Def Digest website that the following Blu-ray extras were announced. I apologize in posting them here, as I cannot update the product information with this information:

"Find the Smurfs" Game; The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol Mini-movie; Smurf-O-Vision: Second Screen Experience; "The Smurfs Fantastic Adventure" Game; Director's Commentary; Producer, Writers and VFX Supervisor Commentary; Deleted & Extended Scenes; The Smurfs: Comic Book to the Big Screen featurette; Smurf Speak: Meet the Cast featurette; Going Gargamel featurette; Progression Reels; "Happy Music" Montage; and Blue-pers.

For technical information, the video will be 1080p and the audio will be a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack.

I have seen a DVD product listing on Amazon.com that includes The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol mini-movie.

Too bad there's no code, included with the Blu-ray, to redeem the Smurfs SIM game from Apple's Appstore and/or for the Android fall release of the Smurfs SIM game.

Funny and entertaining for the whole family, November 8, 2011

This movie resembles two recent 3D videos: it uses the same combination of real-life footage with cartoons as "Yogi bear" and its cartoon heroes resemble gnomes from "Gnomeo and Juliet". Like with "Yogi Bear", there is an entertaining plot which keeps you occupied, and there is good humor which makes you laugh. Smurfs is a little better than Yogi Bear, though, because plot is more sophisticated and acting is more complex and involved. There is nothing in this movie to scare little kids but they may get bored as one probably has to be 10+ years old to understand all the humor and adult's problems with balancing professional life with family and Smurfs, but adults will certainly have fun. I honestly think it is one of the better movies that came out in 3D to-date.

Talking about 3D - 3D effects are OK but not outstanding. There are several scenes made with extensive use of computer graphics done with 3D in mind which stand out, but the rest of the footage is regular 3D footage of live action with fine, but not stunning depth.

I noticed that this movie got several bad reviews on Amazon, with one and two stars ratings. As I looked through those reviews, I noticed that they were all written by people who remember Smurfs from TV shows from decades ago and who are frustrated that Smurfs in this movie are so different from what they remember. I can't blame them - this is human nature and the way how we attach to memories from the past. I never saw the original story, and if I saw it today, I probably would find it boring and outdated as the majority of old films and shows. Without the set of mind pre-determined by expectations about smurfs, I enjoyed the movie and found that it was fun to watch!

A Great Smurfs Movie Comes Along Once in a Blue Moon!, August 7, 2011

I just finished watching Smurfs with my kids in the movie theater and definitely recommend it to children agest 7-12. To properly rate this movie, I'll comment on it from the standpoint of "should you take your kids to see it?" The movie itself is good with an easy storyline to follow. Gargamel wants to capture the "essence" of the Smurfs so he can be the besdt magician in the world. To do that, he needs to capture one of the Smurfs and the movie goes about telling the story of how he tries to do that. I thought that a child under the age of 7 will likely not get all the innuendos and may even be scared at certain points in the movie--especiall of Gargamel. 12 year old on the other hand are about at the ceiling where they would find the movie funny and entertaining. There are definitely some good jokes that even adults would like--but not enough to recommend it solely for adults who want to see it themselves (although curiously there are always adults in this sort of movie--I kind of wonder why?) A good flick that is about the right length for kids to sit through with some good action and funny moments.

Enjoyed this movie greatly. Tremendous story and factual history. Movies like this are seldom seen on the big screen today. If I could see more of this type of movies in the theater I would spend more time there instead of attending a theater only once in every five years.

Krzyzacy (Knights of the Teutonic Order) is a historical epic based on the book by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The story is a fictionalized account of the days leading up to the decisive Polish-Lithuanian and Teutonic battle on July 15, 1410. The Battle of Grunwald (or Tannenberg) began the decline of the Teutonic Order and is remembered and celebrated by its victors to this day. The word "Krzyzacy" in Polish is referring to the large cross the Teutonic Knights were known for wearing on their tunic, in a way calling them cross wearers. But these men of the cross also carried swords; their swords may have been used against pagans but Catholic Poles as well.

Running nearly three hours in length, Krzyzacy shows us the political intrigue that leads up to the famous battle. In a way, there is a lot of tit for tat between the Poles and the Teutonic Order. In the early part of the story, a Polish noblewoman is killed by the Teutonic Knights and her husband goes to avenger her. This leads to his daughter being taken hostage by the Order, which leads to further retaliation. After several skirmished and duels, the battle is set to happen. If you can, I would recommend watching Krzyzacy on a big screen to take in the massive final battle.

Unquestionably, Krzyzacy is a classic and ranks among the best-known Polish cinema. As Krzyzacy was made in 1960, not all the effects are realistic as they would be if made today. Although it would be great to see a remake of Krzyzacy, it still will remain a classic that brings history to life.

"Order of Teutonic Knights" was released in 1960 to international acclaim, and it remains a landmark film for Polish cinema. I'm sure that, when it first came out, it was quite a spectacular experience at the local theatre. Clocking in at just under three hours, it tells the tale of the rising conflict between Polish nobility in the Middle Ages and the very powerful multi-national order of titular knights who may be devout Christians, but are also ruthless in their determination to expand their power throughout Europe.

There are some excellent performances in the film, and a number of memorable scenes. It has a very authentic "look", quite a contrast to some of Hollywood's medieval epics. Special kudos to the prolonged final battle scene--there were no computer-generated effects in those days--you really are looking at thousands of extras in this spectacular finale. This must have been a very expensive movie for the Polish film industry.

Unfortunately there are some technical problems with the DVD which prevented me from giving "Knights" a higher rating. The dialogue is naturally in the original Polish with English subtitles--subtitles which far too often seem to be out of synch with the person who is speaking. The widescreen, colour image is not as crisp as it should be. There also appears to have been some "cropping"--for example, there is a scene early in the film where our young heroine is singing a song, and most of her head is "cut off". Unfortunately there are numerous other examples throughout the disc where heads, sometimes whole characters, seem to be missing from the scene. I also suspect that the film might not be the original, uncut version--there seem to be "jumps" in the storyline that cause the viewer to scratch his/her head a little !

Bottom line--it would seem that we have a very fine film here that has not been presented on DVD with the technical quality that it deserves. Then again, the problem may originate with the source material--older films sadly do not always remain in pristine condition. So--recommended with caution.

BREAK KE BAAD has one of the best opening credits that we have ever seen. Right from a cinema screen to a t-shirt to steps to a terrace floor, the opening names appear innovatively, leaving a grin on your face.

moments, which is a must for a romcom. Lilette Dubey blaming the several remakes of Devdas for spoiling the youth is uproarious and so is Abhay changing his relationship status on facebook to 'It's complicated'. Wish there were more of such moments. Vishal-Shekhar's music is wonderful with many hummable songs. Andre Menezes choreography captures the beauty of Australia effectively.

Imran Khan is well suited for the role of a lover boy and gives a decent performance. Deepika Padukone enthralls you with an earnest act. Even though they are good individually, the chemistry between them is missing. Sharmila Tagore is very good. Lilette Dubey is great and gets to deliver some hilarious lines. Shahana Goswami is admirable and so is Yudhisthir Das. Navin Nischol is good in his small role.

BREAK KE BAAD is an average affair which doesn't 'break' new ground in romcoms.
